Day 8: Purify your heart

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Aya of the Day:

12:7
12:8
12:9
Certainly were there in Joseph and his brothers signs for those who ask, When they said, “Joseph and his brother are more beloved to our father than we, while we are a clan. Indeed, our father is in clear error. Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people.” [Surat Yusuf, 12:7-9]

Lesson of the Day: Purify your heart

Islam comes to purify our heart, yet none of us can say we are completely free of the diseases of the heart. Look at the brothers of Yusuf (as)- it started with being resentful over the special relationship between Yusuf and their father. Then they expressed the wish to kill him. Then they planned it. And then they executed it. After executing it, they had to lie to their father. Look at how the situation snowballed. And how did it start? By allowing the resentment to grow.

I feel that Ramadan teaches us to stop this from the root. When we are fasting, what are we taught? If someone treats us in a bad way, we remind ourselves by saying “O Allah i am fasting!”. So if we even think of acting upon some resentment in our hearts, we are forced to stop.
