Except for the righteous

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

43:67
Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous [Qur’an, 43:67]

The Day of Judgment will be an extremely hard day. Chaotic. Scary. And those who were the closest friends in this world will not only ignore each other, they will be enemies. Blaming each other for their own shortcomings. And that hurts. But that’s how difficult that day will be.

But Allah tells us “except al-muttaqeen”. Muttaqeen has been translated as the righteous but it is more like God-conscious. Those people who try to be conscious of God, who strive for good and encourage others to do good; those people are not enemies. These people could even be under the shade of Allah when there is no shade but His shade.

If you want to be a good friend, try to be good yourself and encourage your friends to do good. That is the measure of how good a friend you are. Because at the end of the day, that is what will remain. Be sincere in your love.

This is not a call to perfection. All of us make mistakes. That’s ok. And we have worldly needs that can only be satisfied by close friends. But this is a call to elevate those relationships, not to get rid of them. Elevate your relationship. You will be closer in this world and the next inshAllah. And you will smile when you see your friend on the Day of Judgment when everyone else is disowning their closest family, because your relationship is based on something higher. And when the sweltering heat gets to everyone else, you and your loved ones will feel the cool breeze under the shade of your Lord, inshAllah.

Elevate your relationships.
